Royal jelly is a creamy secretion produced by the head glands of young worker bees, on which queen bee larvae are fed. It's the most expensive and most perishable product to come out of a hive; kept outside a fridge, it quickly loses its active compounds.
The honest answer on its benefits is this: there are small-scale studies in humans, there are promising findings, but there isn't a level of evidence that lets us say it "cures" any condition. What Is Royal Jelly, How Is It Obtained?
Royal jelly is secreted from the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands in the head of young worker bees aged 5–15 days. Every larva in the hive is fed this secretion for the first three days; a larva destined to become a queen, on the other hand, eats nothing but royal jelly throughout its entire development. The fact that a queen lives many times longer than a worker bee and can lay thousands of eggs a day is attributed to this difference in diet.
In production, the beekeeper prepares frames fitted with artificial queen cups and transfers a one-day-old larva into each cup (a process called larval grafting). The colony, believing these larvae are queen candidates, fills the cups with royal jelly. After about 72 hours, the frame is removed, the larvae are taken out, and the accumulated secretion is collected one cup at a time.
The amount taken from one frame is measured in grams. The labour intensity and the mandatory cold chain after collection make royal jelly the most expensive product to come out of a hive — the price gap with honey isn't a quality difference, it's a difference in how the two are produced.
The most practical thing that sets royal jelly apart from other hive products is its storage requirement: it's the only one that needs a cold chain.
What's in Royal Jelly? What Is 10-HDA?
Royal jelly is mostly water by weight. The rest consists of protein, sugar and fatty acids; vitamins and minerals are present only in trace amounts. Figures vary with season, floral source and colony, so they're given as ranges.

10-HDA (10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid) is a fatty acid found in nature only in royal jelly. Because of this, it's used as the measure of whether a product is genuine royal jelly and how fresh it is — it's the first value checked in a lab analysis.
It's worth lowering expectations about vitamin content from the outset: royal jelly is not a source of vitamins. The B vitamins it contains are present only in trace amounts and don't provide a meaningful contribution from the few grams eaten daily. What makes royal jelly interesting isn't its vitamins, but its unique proteins and fatty acids.
Royal Jelly's Benefits: Where Does the Evidence Stand?
Most royal jelly content online reports the results of cell-culture and rat experiments as if they were proven in humans. But a substance working in a test tube or in a rat doesn't mean it will work in a human. The table below shows how much data actually exists on each topic.

Which topic has the most data?
Menopause symptoms. In a randomised placebo-controlled study of 200 women in Iran, the group taking 1,000 mg of royal jelly a day had better symptom scores after 8 weeks than the placebo group. This single study doesn't amount to a treatment recommendation, but it shows the topic has been taken seriously and studied.
Dry eye comes second: in a double-blind study of 43 people in Japan, tear volume increased compared with placebo after 8 weeks of use. The low participant count means the result needs confirmation from independent studies.
Why can't we say "proven benefit"?
For three reasons. The studies have low participant counts, most were done at a single centre, and there are no confirming repeat studies. What's more, because the 10-HDA content of the products used varies from study to study, products of genuinely different strength are being compared under the single heading "royal jelly".
Royal jelly is a food supplement; it is not a medicine and cannot be used in place of one to treat any condition. If you're considering using it, especially if you're on regular medication, consult your doctor.
Who Shouldn't Use Royal Jelly?
Royal jelly's most concrete and best-documented effect isn't a benefit — it's its allergy risk. The medical literature reports cases of asthma attacks and anaphylaxis developing after taking royal jelly; the main allergen held responsible is the MRJP3 protein, which can cross-react with honeycomb proteins.
- People with asthma and those who have reacted to bee products before should not use it. A history of atopy is a common feature of the reported cases.
- Those with a history of pollen, bee-sting or food allergy should not try it without consulting a doctor.
- There isn't enough data showing it's safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding; it isn't recommended during these periods.
- Bee products should not be given to babies under one year old.
- People on regular medication, especially blood thinners, should not start it without asking their doctor.
An allergic reaction can start with tingling around the mouth, itching and a rash; if shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing or faintness occurs, seek emergency care without delay. It's a sensible precaution for first-time users to start with a very small amount.
How Should Royal Jelly Be Stored and Taken?
How royal jelly is stored is the single biggest factor in its quality. Because its water content is high and its active compounds are heat-sensitive, it needs to stay cold from the moment it's collected until it's eaten.
On a shelf, in a heated jar, or stirred into a hot drink, royal jelly is a product that's royal jelly in name only.
Fresh royal jelly is stored in the fridge, in a dark, tightly sealed container out of the light. If it will sit for a long time, the freezer is preferred. The freeze-dried powder form is more stable because it contains no water, but it too needs to be kept cool and dry.
Two rules apply when taking it: don't add it to a hot drink, and don't let it sit on a metal spoon for long. It's usually taken by holding it under the tongue or mixed into a spoonful of honey. There's no single correct amount; the studies mentioned above used around 1,000 mg a day, but that's a research protocol, not a treatment dose.
How Can You Spot Genuine Royal Jelly?
Royal jelly is a product that's easy to fake and dilute; you can't tell from its appearance. The only solid criterion to check is an analysis report.
The international standard ISO 12824:2016 defines royal jelly's production, storage and labelling conditions, and uses the 10-HDA ratio as a quality indicator: fresh royal jelly is expected to contain at least 1.4 grams per 100 grams, and freeze-dried product at least 3.5 grams, of 10-HDA. That's the one document to ask a seller for.
Beyond that, the practical questions to ask are: when was the product collected, has it stayed in a cold chain since collection, and how will it be shipped to you? A seller who doesn't use a cold pack in shipping is sending you a product that's no longer the same by the time it reaches your door. Its taste is mildly sour and sharp; a sweet-tasting royal jelly may have been mixed with honey or syrup.
"Home tests" don't work here either. There's no way to judge royal jelly's authenticity by its texture, colour, or how it dissolves in water.
The Difference Between Royal Jelly and Honey
Both come out of the hive, but that's where the similarities end. Honey is the ripened form of flower nectar bees gather from outside: it comes from an external source, its water content is under 20%, and thanks to this it stays good for years at room temperature.
Royal jelly, on the other hand, isn't gathered from outside — it's produced inside the bee's own body. Its water content is over 60%, so it needs a fridge. Honey is a food eaten daily; royal jelly is a supplement taken in grams.

Is royal jelly actually beneficial?
Partly. Small-scale, placebo-controlled human studies have reported positive results for menopause symptoms and dry eye.
