Honey milk is a traditional drink: warm milk with a teaspoon of honey stirred in. It has been an evening habit in Anatolia and across much of the world for centuries. This page explains what the drink is, what is and is not known about it, and how to prepare it.
Let us start with the honest part: there is almost no clinical research on honey and milk taken together. The assessments below apply to what is known about each ingredient on its own. No credible source says this mixture treats anything, and content that claims otherwise deserves skepticism.
What Is in a Glass of Honey Milk?
Approximate values for one cup made with 200 ml (about 7 fl oz) of whole milk and a teaspoon (roughly 8 g) of honey:
| Nutrient | Approximate amount |
|---|---|
| Energy | 150-160 kcal |
| Protein | 6-7 g |
| Carbohydrate | 16-18 g (half of it from honey) |
| Calcium | 230-240 mg |
Honey milk is a drink with calories, not a supplement. The protein and calcium come from the milk; the sugar comes from the honey.
What the Evidence Says
Sleep and winding down — evidence: weak
A warm drink before bed feels calming to many people, and an evening routine matters for sleep hygiene in its own right. But there is no reliable clinical evidence that honey milk regulates sleep. The widely repeated claim that "the sugar in honey suppresses orexin" stretches animal research on wakefulness far past what it supports. Persistent sleep trouble is a question for a physician, not for the kitchen.
Cough and throat irritation — evidence: moderate (for honey itself)
Reviews report that honey may ease symptoms of acute cough in children, and NICE's acute cough guidance lists honey among first-line options for children over one year. That evidence belongs to honey; adding it to milk does not strengthen it. Warm liquid soothing the throat is a separate, well-known effect.
Protein and calcium — evidence: indirect
Milk is a known source of calcium and protein, and one cup covers roughly a quarter of an adult's daily calcium. That is the milk's contribution, not the mixture's. Saying it "builds strong bones" oversells a plain nutritional fact.
Use on skin — evidence: weak
Honey and milk masks are a traditional practice, and honey's humectant property is well documented. There is no evidence that the mixture clears acne, reverses aging or removes scars; those claims come from cosmetics marketing. Skin conditions belong with a dermatologist.
How to Make Honey Milk
Warm a cup of milk without boiling it. Once it cools to a temperature you can comfortably hold, stir in a teaspoon of honey. Adding honey to boiling milk damages some of its heat-sensitive enzymes and aroma compounds, leaving it to act mostly as a sweetener.
Traditionally it is drunk about half an hour before bed. People with lactose intolerance can use lactose-free milk or a plant-based drink; protein and calcium values change accordingly.
Who Should Be Careful
- Infants under one year: no honey-containing mixture, ever. Clostridium botulinum spores that can be present in honey may cause infant botulism. This is a rule, not a preference.
- People with diabetes: honey is sugar; a teaspoon adds about 6 g of carbohydrate.
- Anyone tracking calories: added on top of existing meals, it creates a surplus.
- People with lactose intolerance: bloating and digestive complaints are likely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is honey milk good for sleep?
Honey milk is a common traditional habit as part of an evening routine, and the soothing effect of a warm drink is well known. There is no definitive clinical evidence that it regulates sleep. A doctor should be consulted for persistent sleep problems.
Is honey added to hot milk?
Rather than adding honey to boiling milk, it's more appropriate to wait for the milk to cool down a bit; at high temperature, some of honey's heat-sensitive enzymes and aroma compounds are damaged. Honey should be added and stirred in only after the milk has become warm.
Does honey milk cause weight gain?
A glass of honey milk carries around 180–200 calories. Considered within your daily calorie balance, it doesn't cause weight gain on its own, but drinking it in addition to your existing meals creates a calorie surplus.
Can honey milk be given to babies?
No honey-containing mixture should be given to babies under one year old. Clostridium botulinum spores that can be present in honey may cause infant botulism. This risk goes away once a child turns one.
