Comb honey and strained honey, when they come from the same hive and the same harvest, are the same honey; the only difference is whether the honey has been taken out of the comb. In comb honey, the honey sits inside the wax cells the bees have built, and is sold together with that wax. In strained honey, the same honey has been separated from the comb and put into a jar.
So the statement "comb honey is more natural" is partly true, but the reason for it is often explained incorrectly. Below you'll find the real differences, whether the wax is eaten, storage and price, and who each one suits.

What Is the Real Difference?
The bee brings the nectar to the hive, reduces its water content, fills the mature honey into wax cells, and caps them with a thin layer of wax. From this point there are two paths.
In the first path, the comb is cut out of the frame and placed as it is into a jar or box: comb honey. In the second path, the comb's wax cappings are removed and the frame is spun in a centrifuge to separate the honey from the wax: strained honey. Straining doesn't require heat; what makes the honey flow out is centrifugal force, not heat. After straining, the honey is passed through a filter; whether this filter is coarse or fine varies by producer, and this is the actual step that affects the honey's pollen content.
The honey itself is the same in both products. The difference is whether it's presented with the wax or without it.

Is Comb Honey's Wax Eaten?
Yes. Beeswax is a substance eaten as food, and comb honey is eaten together with its wax. The body can't digest wax; it's chewed in the mouth, the honey is extracted from it, and the remaining wax is either swallowed or spat out like chewing gum. Both are common habits. Swallowing a large amount of wax at once can cause digestive discomfort; it's more comfortable to consume it as you chew rather than building it up.
The wax itself isn't a source of nutritional value; what makes comb honey special isn't the benefit of the wax but the fact that the honey sits, entirely unprocessed, inside the cell the bee sealed. We cover beeswax in detail in our dedicated article.
Is Comb Honey More Natural?
The part that's true: mixing anything into comb honey afterwards is far harder than doing so with strained honey. Trying to fill the wax cells with syrup afterwards damages the comb's structure and gives it away. This is why comb honey is the most protected form of presentation against being adulterated after the fact — but as explained below, it offers no full protection against adulteration through feeding.
The part that's not true: strained honey doesn't mean "processed" or "adulterated". The centrifuge doesn't change the honey's composition. What matters with strained honey isn't the straining process itself, but whether it was subsequently heated and passed through a fine filter. This is shown by the HMF and diastase values on the analysis report.
One caveat: if bees are fed sugar syrup during the flowering season, they'll fill it into the comb too. Comb honey offers no full protection against this form of adulteration either; knowing the producer still matters.
Are Comb Honey and Natural Comb Honey the Same Thing?
No, but they're related. Both are presented with the comb; the difference is in how the comb was built.
In a modern hive, the bee builds onto a ready-made foundation sheet the producer has fitted into the frame; the base pattern of the cells is given from the start. In a natural log hive, the bee builds the entire comb itself inside the log, and the comb is irregular, in its own natural dimensions. How Is It Eaten, How Is It Stored?
Comb honey isn't scraped out with a spoon, it's cut with a knife: it's taken out of the jar in a slice, put on bread, or chewed directly. Leaving it whole on a cheese board is a common use too.
Storage conditions are the same for both: at room temperature, in a sealed container, out of sunlight. The fridge isn't needed. Putting comb honey in the fridge hardens the wax and makes it harder to cut. The heat limit is shared too: above 40°C lowers the honey's enzyme activity, and in comb honey it also softens the wax and damages its structure.
Which Suits Whom?
- Daily consumption, breakfast, recipes, honey drinks: strained honey. Taken with a spoon, easy to measure, lower cost per kilogram.
- Gifts, entertaining guests, a cheese board, or wanting something "completely unprocessed": comb honey.
- If concern about additives comes first: comb honey practically eliminates the risk of anything being mixed in afterwards.
- Households with children: strained honey is more practical; no honey of any kind should be given to babies under one year old.
